Bold, Steady Leadership in Times of Crisis

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez is the leader we can trust to keep us safe – in good times and bad. Ed’s bold, steady leadership has kept our county moving forward through massive floods, the devastating pandemic and shutdown, and the resulting near collapse of our criminal court system that caused severe overcrowding in the jail.

We’ve finally turned the corner on crime since the pandemic, with double-digit decreases in the past year. But Ed won’t stop until every Harris County resident feels safe on our streets and in our homes.

Ed is a public safety collaborator and is leading regional efforts to combat the true threats to public safety like domestic violence, human trafficking, opioid abuse, and reckless driving.

Ed continues to keep nearly 900 murder and capital murder suspects off our streets while the state and county work to reduce the criminal court case backlog.

Ed partnered with the county’s hospital district to provide health care and mental health care to people in the jail, securing an increase of nearly $100 million in health care and mental health care resources.

Ed recently opened the Women’s Empowerment Center to provide holistic services to women in jail, including educational and vocational programs from Houston Community College.

Ed required body cameras for all uniformed deputies and will soon require body cameras for all detention officers in the jail – a first for any sheriff’s office in Texas.

Ed pledged to ensure that women account for at least 30% of every new cadet class by the year 2030 – making the Harris County Sheriff’s Office the largest sheriff’s office in America to  join the National 30×30 Initiative.

Ed implemented an aggressive training program that has resulted in hundreds of deputies earning their certification as swift water rescue technicians.

Ed has served 18 years with the Houston Police Department, three terms on Houston City Council, and seven years as our county Sheriff. Through it all, he’s put politics aside and maintained a sharp focus on keeping our communities and families safe and thriving.

As Sheriff, Ed will continue to champion proven, data-driven policies to keep our families safe, reform our criminal justice system, and break the cycle of incarceration to move people back to productive lives.

Ed Gonzalez looks out for us. In the Democratic Primary on March 5, let’s re-elect Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
